Class Name: Goldfinch

This term our topic is:
What Would Traction Man Use To Build Our School?

To kick off our spring term, we have a new science based topic learning more about everyday materials. We will be working scientifically and really exploring materials and their properties. We will be exploring what materials are used to make our toys, our schools and our homes. We will even have a go at designing Traction Man a new outfit and also the perfect playground!

In English, we will explore the book Traction Man is Here by Mini Grey, writing thought and speech bubbles for the characters along the way and some instructions on how to look after a pet scrubbing brush, all building up to the children writing Traction Man’s Next Adventure!

During our topic we will be exploring the following questions...

How can you classify your toys taking account of the materials they are made of?

What are the main reasons for choosing materials for different parts of the school buildings?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of some common materials?

How can you design and make your own Traction Man using a variety of different materials?

How can you design a perfect playground using a range of materials and explain why you have chosen the materials?

Welcome to Year 2!

We hope that your child enjoys being in our Year 2 class!

Reading

Reading is an essential part of your child's learning. Your child will be sent home with a colour banded book to match their ability. They will have a guided reading session every week, which will include shared reading, and accompanying tasks. Please take time to look at and read your child's reading books and any other books, with them. When you have read with your child please record this in their reading record. If a child reads 3 or more times at home each week, they will be entered into our 'In It, To Win It' draw to be in with a chance of choosing a golden envelope to win a prize!

The children continue to have access to Bug Club online, where reading books will be allocated to each child. When they access the books there will be short tasks which they need to complete in order to win points. The more points they win the more time they get to spend it in the shop.

P.E.

P.E. will take place on a Monday. Please ensure that your child comes to school on this day in their P.E. kit. They will stay in their P.E. kit all day and where possible, P.E. will take place outside so please make sure children are dressed to keep warm. Please also remember that children need to have their hair up in a pony-tail and to remove earrings and other jewellery for P.E. If your child has newly pierced ears please pop in to the office to fill in the appropriate form.

Homework

Could we ask that you help your child practise their spellings, which will be checked weekly. We expect your child to begin to use these words in their writing. Spellings can be practised in different ways such as writing them out using paint, or in sand or practising them with magnetic letters or making a game up with them. You can also look out for them when reading and when you’re out and about!

Children in Year 2 will also come home with a piece of maths homework each week related to what we have been learning about in class.

Times Tables

Please can you encourage your child to learn their times tables and their inverses at home. They have all received a log in for Times Tables Rock Stars and you will find this in their Reading Records.

Please log on to https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth to access their personal page.
